Sarah Elizabeth (Shaw) Bedford was born in Tom Township, Benton County, Missouri in 1848 to Captain Thomas Jefferson Shaw and Louise Ann Long. Moving to the Mount Nebo area just south of Weatherford, Parker County, Texas, Sarah enjoyed her many siblings until at the age of 17 when she married William Gordon Bedford and moved nearby. Shortly after the Civil War the Bedford's fled to Missouri and then Arkansas to escape the marauding Indians until the mid 1870's when they moved back to the Parker County area. Sarah Elizabeth and William Gordon Bedford produced eight children.

Six of the eight children lived to adulthood. After the death of her husband William Gordon Bedford in 1917 Sarah Elizabeth applied for and received a Texas State Pension for her husband's service during the Civil War. Sarah Elizabeth (Shaw) Bedford died in 1941 at the ripe old age of 92. She is buried with her husband in the town of Haskell, Haskell County, Texas.
