Robert A. Lundquist, 86, Grand Rapids, died May 25, 2012, at Garden Court Chateau in Grand Rapids.

Robert Alfred Lundquist was born June 8, 1925, in Isle to Alfred and Mary (Lindholm) Lundquist. Robert was one of nine children, five boys and four girls. He had happy memories of growing up on the farm; they raised cows and other animals, had a large vegetable garden, and always had something to eat, even during the Big Depression.

Bob grew up and attended school in Eastwood and Thor. He went to school for diesel mechanics. Bob started out working in the sawmill and also for the DNR for a short time. At the age of 19, Bob started working at the Hanna Mine and retired at the age of 54. Bob had many extra jobs over the years such as doing maintenance work at Camp Mishawaka, being the Harris Township Supervisor, and was on the Itasca County Hospital Welfare Board.

Robert married Elaine O’Konek on Oct. 22, 1947, and they had four children. Bob counted his marriage and his family among his favorite memories, and they gave him the most happiness in life. He and Elaine did a lot of traveling, Hawaii three times, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and most of the United States. They had a winter home in Laferia, Texas, which they enjoyed for 25 years. They were married for 55 years when Elaine died.

Bob’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, coaching youth baseball, mechanic and carpentry work, and he was really good at fixing things. Bob cut logs in Splithand and helped build the Faith Baptist Church in Grand Rapids.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; one sister and three brothers.

Robert is survived by his children, Nan (Michael) Dee, Virginia; Greg (Patty) Lundquist, Ellsworth, Wis.; Lynn (John) Randall, Grand Rapids; and Paula (Brian) Litchke, Bovey; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Eleanor Weitnauer, Aitkin; Lillian Anderson, Brainerd; and Lucille Walz, St. Louis Park; brother, Clarence Lundquist, Aitkin; and many other relatives and friends.
