His wife Alice (Mahoney) later stated in the 1900 Census that she had entered the United States in 1853 and so apparently married Richard by 1856 in New York. According to census records, their first son Jeremiah was born in Wisconsin in 1857. The families of Richard and his brother Patrick settled in Waukesha and lived there from probably the late 1850's as they each filed their Declaration of Intention in Waukesha in 1858.
Richard and Alice's son John was an Alderman in Waukesha and a founding member of the court of the Catholic Order of Foresters, known as St. Joseph's No. 120.
Obituary from Waukesha Freeman, November 18, 1897:
Richard Russell, an old resident of this city, died early Saturday morning (November 12, 1897) at his home on St. Paul Avenue in his 80th year. Mr. Russell was born in the County of Dublin, Ireland, the the year 1817, and came to tthis country in a very early day and had resided in Waukesha most of the time. He is survived by a widow and six sons, all of whom live here. The funeral was held Monday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Joseph's Catholic church.
