DEATH OF Wm. EDWARDS

William Edwards, son of Allen and Sarah Ann Edwards, was born Aug. 8, 1844, in Bartholomew county, Ind., and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry Wright, north of Williamson, Dec. 12, 1925, at the advanced age of 81 years, 4 months and 4 days, after a short illness with pneumonia.

When he was five years old his parents moved from Indiana to Davis county, Iowa, where they resided for one year, and then came to Lucas county, where most of his remaining life has been spent.

In July, 1863, when our country sent out a clarion call for volunteers to help preserve this great union, young Edwards, who was then 18 years of age, answered his country's call and became a soldier in Company C., First Iowa Infantry, serving for three years under the captaincy of Asberry Conway.

At the close of the war he returned to his home here and on Sept. 20, 1865, was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann McDowell, who passed away on April 18, 1922, since which time he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Wright. He was the father of six children, all of whom are living. They are Allen Edwards, Frank Edwards, Robert Edwards and Flora Belle Wright, of Williamson; Grant Edwards, of Chariton; and Mrs. June Blair, of Clarinda. Nineteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren with other relatives also survive.

Thus, one by one the veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic are passing on, their ranks growing thinner and thinner until soon they will live only in our memories. Mr. Edwards was a man of strong convictions and was honest and upright in all his dealings. He was a good neighbor and a loyal friend, and while in later years, old age prevented him from being active in community interests, he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the Williamson Christian church, conducted by Rev. Frank Bean, of the Chariton Methodist church. The remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Oxford cemetery.
