Mrs. Elizabeth Convey
Elizabeth Viall Convey, 98, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Northampton Manor. She was the widow of John Hamilton CONVEY, who preceded her in death May 25, 2000.
Mrs. Convey was born Dec. 3, 1909, in Elizabethton, Tenn., and was the daughter of Julia HARRIS and Frank Elmore VIALL.
She rose from a family of lumbermen to become an accomplished musician with a lifelong joyous dedication to musical instruction. She studied at the Settlement School in Philadelphia, and became an understudy of a famous cellist, Orlando Cole.
She introduced a large segment of the population of Frederick County to the joys of music from 1956, until giving her last lessons in February of this year. She possessed a deep, abiding spirituality that manifest itself both in her music and all aspects of her life. She was an accomplished artist, primarily in pastels. She leaves an artistic legacy that included a creative use of small rocks in her art to caricature faces that started while entertaining her grandchildren at the beach.
She extolled self-development, uncompromising honesty, clarity of speech, frugality, and self-discipline -- continuing to practice several hours a day until only months prior to her death. She had a keen wit and a frequently self-deprecating sense of humor, and would often quote and sing humorous lines of Gilbert and Sullivan.
She is survived by two sons (Julian & William), four grandchildren, one great-grandson, a cousin who was very close to her, and numerous musical children of all ages whose lives were enriched by her instruction and example.
A graveside service open to the public will be held at 11 a.m. at St. John's Cemetery, East and third St., Frederick, Saturday, July 26. Officiating will be The Rev. John L. Manley from St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick.
In accord with her wishes, contributions may be made to the Frederick Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 3389, Frederick, MD 21705, in lieu of flowers.
