FORMER ALTON MAN DIES AT SHELDON

Alton relatives who attended the funeral of James Den Hartog at Sheldon Wednesday were his sisters here, Mrs. Herman Scholten and children, Mrs. Jane Slothouber and Dora, Mrs. D. DeGraaf, and his brother, Herman Den Hartog. Services were at the First Reformed Church, Rev. Vis officiating, and pallbearers were Gerrit Sipma, John Van Beek, Marinus Sterk, Theo. D. Hoogh, John Colsman and Henry Maasen.

James Den Hartog was born on February 17, 1889, at Orange City and passed away May 7, 1944, at Sheldon, Iowa aged 55 years, 2 months and 18 days.

On February 17, 1916, he was married to Miss Dena Genrink. They made their home near Alton but since 1923 have lived near Sheldon.

During his lifetime, Mr. Den Hartog served the Reformed Church of Alton as deacon and when he moved to Sheldon he was first deacon in 1929 and then elder in 1937 in which capacity he served with credit to himself and with benefit to the congregation. He was also a Sunday School teacher.

Surviving are his wife and nine children. (Florence) Mrs. Gerrit Dykstra of Sheldon, (Marion) Mrs. Clarence Haak of Primghar, Robert who is serving overseas and at present is in England; Ruth, Edna, Willard, Arlene, Elmer and Eugene, still at home. There are also five brothers and three sisters: Dick of Orange City, Herman of Alton, John and Walter of Orange City, Ed of Sanborn, Mrs. Slothouber, Mrs. H. Scholten and Mrs. DeGraaf, all of Alton.
