ABBEVILLE. . .Charles Mathison, a resident of Abbeville, died late Monday night, August 10, 2009, in the Twin Magnolias Assisted Living in Abbeville. He was 84.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 13, 2009, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Teddy Ward and Reverend Mike Whitt officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:00 A. M. Thursday at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Abbeville, P.O. Box 606, Abbeville, AL. 36310 or to Covenant Hospice, 2855 Ross Clark Circle, Suite 110, Dothan, AL 36301

Mr. Mathison was born in Waycross, Georgia but was reared in Dothan and Abbeville, son of the late George Bertram Mathison, Sr. and Evelyn Berry Mathison. He was a 1942 graduate of Abbeville High School and attended Auburn University where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Mr. Mathison served his country during World War II in the U. S. Army Air Force and also during the Korean War in the U. S. Air Force. During his military service, he received the Good Conduct Medal, three Battle Stars, the Certificate of Valor Award, the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal and four Bronze Stars. Recently, he participated in the Honor Flight for veterans to Washington.

Mr. Mathison retired from the U. S. Postal Service in the Abbeville Post Office as a letter carrier after thirty-four years service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville, the Bradley-Keller American Legion Post and was a former member of the V.F.W. Mr. Mathison was preceded in death by his wife, Joy Wynn Mathison, two sisters, Evelyn Rountree and Ruth (Biddy) Comer and a brother, George Bertram Mathison, Jr.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Nancy Mathison Mino and husband, Jim Mino, Birmingham; a son, Charles Wynn Mathison, Abbeville; a granddaughter, Laura Mino Verner and husband, Burton Verner, Birmingham; two great-grandchildren, Gage Verner and Lanier Verner; a sister-in-law, Etoil Mathison, Abbeville; a niece and several nephews and a cousin, Ina Clark, Abbeville.
