Edith Stowe Barkley, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died unexpectedly on Feb. 16, 2009. She was born in Charlotte, N.C., on June 11, 1927, the daughter of Harry Reid Stowe and Laura Edith Sumner. She graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She taught Spanish, Latin and math after graduation at Truett-McConnell College in Georgia.

She married her high school sweetheart, H. Brock Barkley Jr., an officer in the U.S. Navy, in 1950. She accompanied her husband on their moves to Rhode Island, California, Virginia, Idaho and Massachusetts; they still cherish many Navy friends. During these 12 years, their three children were born. Following their Navy years, they lived in Michigan, Ohio, Idaho, and ultimately settled in Lynchburg in 1981.

She enjoyed visiting her family in the places they lived including California, Oregon, Wisconsin, Haiti, Mali and Nepal. She and her husband enjoyed many worldwide tours and cruises after his retirement.

She was a devoted homemaker and volunteer. Starting as a Girl Scout leader in Erie Shores Girl Scout Council in Ohio, she served as president of the Silver Sage (Idaho) and Skyline (Virginia) Girl Scout Councils, and was a national volunteer. She was honored with the Girl Scout "Thanks Badge," the highest service award in Girl Scouts. Her Girl Scout work built upon her love of the outdoors. Her family remembers swimming, hiking and her knowledge of plants and birds.

She was a longtime volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Daily Bread, a member of the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters and PEO, and an avid bridge player and jigsaw puzzle worker. She was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Brock Barkley; three children, Margaret Barkley Byess and husband, Richard Byess, of Virginia, Brock Barkley III and wife, Sib Barkley, of Washington, and Jane Stowe Barkley of Oregon; eight grandchildren, Abbie Byess, James Byess, Ben Barkley and wife, RachelAnn, Tim Barkley, Joshua Barkley, Katie Barkley, Emily Barkley-Levenson and Amanda Barkley-Levenson; one step-great-grandchild, Javonta Barkley; her brother, Harry Reid Stowe Jr. and wife, Anne, of North Carolina; and sister-in-law, Robbie Barkley of Indiana.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, in the Hume Room at Westminster-Canterbury. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Scholer officiating.
