The Piedmont Herald (March 18, 1897):

We take the following sketch of the father of Mr. H. S. Richardson of this place from The Johnstown Democrat:

John B. Richardson, the subject of this sketch, and whose death has already been mentioned in these columns was born in Shade Township, Somerset County, Pa, March 3, 1823, and died at his home at Buckstown March 4, 1897, aged 74 years and one day. He received his early training at a select school at Stoyestown, where he prepared himself for teaching, being one of the first public school teachers of the county at the age of 15 years.

Nearly a half century ago he was married to Mary Wagner, who still survives him. Twelve children were born to them, nine of whom survive: Mrs. Huldah Dunham of Johnstown, and William, Edwin, and Ralph of the same place; Mrs. Jane Serber of Lanbersville; Norman and Robert of Pittsburg; Howard of Piedmont, W. Va., and Mrs. Annie Williamson of Buckstown.

Mr. Richardson served as assistant revenue assessor under President Johnson and for 15 years was justice of the peace in Shade Township. He lived on the farm all his life, yet a great portion of his time was spent dealing in live stock. He was known as a man of good business qualifications, having served as executor and administrator of a large number of estates. He was a life-long Democrat, being very active in local politics until recent years. In August 1883, he was injured by a run-away team and for more than 13 years, he was a constant sufferer, but during all that time he was able to be around until within a few days of his death. He was buried at Buckstown Cemetery, the funeral being preached at the Lutheran church.

Mr. Richardson connected himself with the Christian church early in life, his mother being one of the first members of this church in Shade Township. All the children living were present at the funeral, being the first time they were all together since the death of their grandmother 16 years ago.
