In the 1920s he worked on oil wells in Osage County, Oklahoma and in the 1930s he worked as a fireman on the boilers for zinc mines in Eagle County, Colorado. In 1942 he worked as a laborer for contractor C.C. Moore at the Mare Island Shipyards in Vallejo, California. Later in life he moved to Caruthers, California to live with his sister Margaret Elizabeth [White] Ragan and her youngest child Thomas Joseph Ragan.
