ILLIOPOLIS - Zelma B. McDonald, 79, of Illiopolis passed away Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, at 3:30 p.m. at her residence.

She was born June 11, 1930, in Mount Auburn, the daughter of Bennett and Beulah Linn Heckwine. She married Ray McDonald on May 7, 1949; he preceded her in death in 1998.

She was a member of the Illiopolis Christian Church, the Illiopolis American Legion Auxiliary, DAV Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society, the Community Service Club, and the Illiopolis Kitchen Band. Zelma was a school cook in Illiopolis for many years and she later worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Edward McDonald; a brother, Norris Heckwine; and a sister, Cleo Heckwine.

She is survived by a son, Ray Allan McDonald (wife, Terrie) of Illiopolis; a daughter, Jeanette Ann Chapman (husband, Spencer) of Edwardsville; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ray Heckwine of Taylorville and Gale Heckwine (wife, Marilyn) of Jesup, Ga.; a sister, Kathleen Lybarger of Illiopolis; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Fullenwider-Park Funeral Home in Illiopolis. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Melissa Ebken officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
