FRANK E. HADDAD SR., GOP LEADER, DIES AT 78
Longtime Republican leader Frank E. Haddad Sr. died yesterday [August 14, 1985] at his home. He was 78. Haddad, patriarch of one of Louisville’s most respected Lebanese-American families was a native of Hammana, Lebanon. During his long career, he was city director of building and housing during the administration of Republican Mayors William O. Cowger and Kenneth Schmied. He served as Jefferson County’s building and housing director as well. Cowger named the colorful and outspoken Haddad to the city post in 1961. After the 1969 elections, in which the Republicans lost control of both City Hall and the County Courthouse, he was named to the county post before the Democratic administration of County Judge Todd Hollenbach took office. Hollenbach kept Haddad on the job for three years, and when he finally resigned, in 1972, it was his own decision. “There was no coercion,” he said at the time. “They (the Democrats) treated me like a favorite son.” “I was the last of the Republicans, kind of like the last of the Mohegans,” he said. “Every party has an advance man, but you need a damn good retreat man, too.” In 1968, during Haddad’s years in the City Hall job, his then 7-year-old grandson, Bruce Haddad, threatened to challenge Democratic Aldermanic President James E. Thornberry to a duel because of remarks uttered about the elder Haddad in a political debate. Haddad talked the lad out of it, saying Thornberry “is like any other boss. He and the Democrats (on the Board of Aldermen) have given us more money than we ever got from the Republican board. He’s the man who pays the money and he wants us to do a good job.” Besides, he told the boy, all Kentucky officials must take an oath not to fight duels. Haddad was a member of Daylight Masonic Lodge #760, Scottish Rite, Kosair Shrine, Second Presbyterian Church and the Lebanese-American Country Club. Survivors include his wife, the former Clara Gallo; two sons, Frank E. Jr. and Robert Haddad; a daughter, Mrs. Richard Meena; three brothers, Joseph F. Sr., George and Edward Haddad; a sister, Mrs. Mary Hurst; and six grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Arch L. Heady Hikes Point Funeral Home, 4109 Taylorsville Road, with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Kosair Children’s Hospital or to charity.
