Abraham Franklin's nickname was "Abram". Whether by mistake or not, the name
Abrin is printed on his grave marker. Most family members referred to him as
"Uncle Coon." We were told that he gained this nickname because he loved to
coon hunt. A copy of a description of Uncle Coon was written by Eldred
Volentine. It reads - "Uncle Coon died June 16, 1932 on Wednesday and was
buried June 17, 1932 on Thursday at Tulip Cemetery. He was 82 and would have
been 83 the 28 day of July. Brother Frame preached the funeral at the home of
his brother Dock Volentine. He was the oldest member of the Athens Baptist
Church. They had eight paulbarrers (sic), Mr. Dan Volentine, Mr. Earl
Volentine, Mr. Frank Volentine, Mr. Curtis Volentine, Mr. Jerry Volentine, Mr.
Floyd Volentine, Mr. Dock Dance, and Mr. Clay Lewis." ( *Note: The grave marker
has the year as 1930. In order for him to have been 83 on his next birthdate,
he would have died in 1930. If he died in 1932 his age would have been 85. (I
believe the 1932 date in Eldred's note is incorrect and the date on the grave
marker is correct. WVH)
