Hazel Elizabeth Hoffman, 84, Centralia,
Kansas, died Wednesday, October 4, 2000
at the Onaga Community Hospital.

Hazel was born March 16, 1916 the daughter
of Clyde and Laura (McCaig) Yarger, on a
farm one half mile west and one half mile
north of Centralia. Hazel graduated from
Centralia High School in 1934 and went on
to complete her normal training and taught
country school for three years following the
completion of her training. She taught for
one year at Clearfork north of Baileyville
on the state line, and for two years in
Hollenberg,Kansas.

She married Norbert Hoffman on April 23,
1939 in Centralia, Kansas at the Congreg-
ational Church parsonage. He survives.

After raising her own family, she babysat
for many children in their home in Centralia.

Hazel was a member of the First Congreg-
ational United Church of Christ in Centralia
and the Women's Fellowship of the church.
She was also a past member of the Armstrong
Moyer American Legion Auxiliary post #216
of Centralia.

She was preceded in death by a daughter,
Glenda Hoffman, in 1965, a sister Wilma
Boeding, and a great-grandson, R.W.
Shumaker.

Hazel is survived by her husband Norbert
Hoffman of Centralia, Kansas; a son Earl
W. Hoffman, Los Alamos, NM; two daughters
Marilyn Shumaker, Netwaka, Kansas and
Sandy Hoffman, Shawnee, Kansas, one
brother, Earl Yarger, Centralia, Kansas;
five sisters, Leota Matthews and Fern Weyer
both of Centralia, Kansas, Erma Gandy,
North Kansas City, Missouri, Audrey
Chestnut, and Mildred Chatham, both of
Topeka, Kansas; five grandchildren five
great-grandchildren, and four great-great-
grandchildren.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday,
October 7, 2000 at the First Congregational
United Church of Christ in Centralia, with
Reverend Vince Williams officiating.

Music by Jane Sedlacek, organist and the
Regional Choir.

Casketbearers were Brad, Todd, Eric and
Chris Shumaker, Stephen Brucken, Austin
Jones, Kenton Russell an Doug Talkington.

Burial was in Centralia Cemetery,
Centralia, Kansas.
