Family lore is that Polly may have been adopted by her grandparents or may have been an orphan. McCarter may have been another name as well. The obituary in the Times-Republican, Marshalltown, Iowa, June 22, 1905, states:
MRS. EMILY HOBBS DEAD
"Was an early Settler fo Iowa Township, Marshall County
"Mrs. Emily Hobbs, wife of the late Judge J. B. Hobbs, who died in January, and one of the pioneer residents of Iowa Township, died of old age Thursday night at 11:45 o'clock, at her home in Albion. Judge Hobbs was one of the first judges of the county, and being among the very first settlers, he and his wife were widely esteemed by hosts of friends. Mrs. Hobbs, who has been ailing for about a year, has been bedfast for the past six months. During that time she has been taken care of by her daughter, Mrs. S. J. Collar. Besides this daughter, the deceased is survived by four sons, John F. Hobbs, living near Albion; Milton B. Hobbs, of Indianola, Neb.; Oscar Hobbs, of Bear, Ark.; and Charles P. Hobbs, of Colorado Springs, Co.
"The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the Methodist church at Albion, and interment will be in the Albion cemetery. The grandsons of the deceased will act as pall bearers."

Granddaughter of John Hasty who was a Private during American Revolution (enlisted in Virginia) and a recognized Patriot by the Daughters of the American Revolution. He served under Capt.'s Blackwell and Marshall as well as Col's Morgan, Febiger, and Heth. Ladies who are descendants of Emily are eligible to join DAR and encouraged to contact a local chapter to inquire about membership. John Hasty Descendants are also eligible to join the Descendants of Valley Forge Lineage Society. John is believed to have been at Valley Forge due to what Virginia units he was with as well as battles participated.
Her husband Johns grandfather Vincent Hobbs is also a recognized Patriot of DAR. Note, DAR recognizes him for Patriotic Service at this time and not for actual military service as noted on the memorial page. The Hobbs have a colorful history...descendants are urged to research to find out more.
