In 1860, he was a farmer living with and/or working for the George W. Sensenich family in East Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was federally drafted and mustered into federal service at Chester (uncertain if that is Chester County or Chester in Bucks County) as a private with Co. K, 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865. In March 1865, his brothers Alfred Noyles and Mifflin Ayers Russell joined him in the company.
