In 1860, he was a carpenter living with his family in Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster March 7, 1865, as a private with Co. K, 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865. He served with his brother Alfred Noyles Russell, which united them with brother Davis Wallace Russell who had been serving with the company for about a year and a half.

He married Martha G. Dunlap October 18 or November 28, 1860 (both dates reported), in Lancaster and fathered the children you see linked below.
