Placid Sharkey, a resident of the Momence community for over 70 yrs. died at the home of his son Rex on Fourth St. at eleven o'clock Tuesday night.

Mr. Sharkey who had spent the winter with his son Elmer in Harvey returned to Momence in late March. He had been at the home of his son Rex for the past month and though not as well as usual, was confined to his bed only since Sunday.

Mr. Sharkey was born near St. Anne on Sept. 26, 1855, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Sharkey. Coming to the Momence community shortly thereafter, he resided here until his marriage in Momence to Ellen Charbonneau in 1879, after which he moved to Kansas. Here his wife died and he was married a second time to Delphine St. Pierre. In 1891, he returned to Momence and settled on a farm north of the city, retiring and coming to the city in 1921. For many years he followed the trade of mason and stone cutter, a number of excellent pieces of masonry here bearing the stamp of his workmanship. He was a member of the Baptist church, attending regularly until recent years when his hearing became defective.

He was the father of 15 children, four sons and one daughter, having preceded him in death. Surviving are sons -- Lee, George, Arthur, Rex of Momence, Elmer of Harvey, Robert of Schneider, Ind. and daughters - Mrs. Pearl grimes, Chicago Heights, Mrs. Bertha Hayden, Lowell, Ind.; Mrs. Gertrude Buch, Crown Point, Ind; Mrs. Esther Ponton, Chicago. He also leaves 32 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Though a hard worker all his life, his sunny disposition and friendly jovial manner kept him young and in spite of his age of 82 years, he was until recently able to care for his home and be about town. He was a great lover of his home and family and was ever ready to sacrifice anything for his children.

Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church at two o'clock this (Friday) afternoon in charge of the Rev. H. Meima. Burial will be made in Momence cemetery with six grandsons serving as casketbearers.
