Lydia Jane Derr
Lydia Jane Scott Derr was born Oct. 10, 1871 in Coshocton County, Ohio, and died March 14, 1950 at her home in the Dale Community near Newkirk, after a brief illness.
She came to Kansas at the age of five with her parents, traveling by covered wagon. The family arrived in Arkansas City Oct. 18, 1876. They settled on a farm northwest of Arkansas City, and then later moved to a farm in the West Bolton community.
In 1896, she was married to G.H. Derr, also of West Bolton community. In 1901, they moved to a farm in Kay county where they lived the remainder of their lives.
Mr. Derr died June 1, 1945, shortly after their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
In 1925, Mrs. Derr and her husband, became members of the First Baptist church in Newkirk.
Mrs. Derr is survived by one son, Theodore Derr, of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Edna McElhenny, of Florence, Kans.; Mrs. Edith Christy, Arkansas City, and Mrs. Nellie Baker, of Arkansas City; seventeen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Ida Vanwinkle, of Los Angeles, a brother, John Scott, of Arkansas City, and a nephew, Charles Randall, also of Arkansas City.
One daughter, Lenora, and a sister, Mary Bell Randall preceded her in death.
