Marcus was born in Brown Co. Illinois on December 29, 1846. His parents were John Hoffman and Eva Jane Hunsaker. He had 10 brothers and sisters. Marcus married Mary Victoria Hughes of Liberty,Illinois. They were married in Adams Co. Illinois on March 14, 1872.
To this union nine children were born. John M., Myrtle H., Blanche L., James Clarence, Chester Marcus, Henry Vance, Otis Otto, Lulu Edith and Iva Vesta.
In 1880 Mark and Mary and four children, lived in Mckee, Adams Co. Illinois. Mark's brother Albert lived with them. From Illinois, they moved to a farm near Dodge City, Kansas in 1899, making the trip in a covered wagon. Mark passed away on March 2, 1916 at age 70.
