The Fields Family
Recollections as told by Frances "Fanny" (Tallman) Redmond, granddaughter of Catherine (Cassady) Fields, 15 February 1988.

Catherine married Alonzo Fields. She loved children and she and Alonzo had six daughters: Sophia, Harriet, Phoebe Ann, Mary Melinda, Elizabeth Ann, Eliza Barbara and two sons, Albert and Henry. There was another daughter, Inez, who died about about age two years. Catherine was widowed young and raised their six daughters alone.

Sophia Fields married James K. Stanley. She had a millinery shop and he had a general store, both located in Stockbridge, Michigan.

Harriet Fields married Charles H. Culver. Harriet and Charles had six children together including twins that died age 2 months.

Mary Melinda Fields married John Spencer Woodworth. They owned a farm on Chilson Road near Howell, Michigan. They later owned a house in the city of Howell. Their children were Myra, Clark, Myrlte, Ethel, Spencer, and Chester.

Elizabeth Ann Fields married Henry Kiehl. He was a "miller". They had five children.

Eliza Barbara Fields married George Brown. George was a tinsmith and they moved to Detroit so that George could earn more money working for the City of Detroit. They had two children, Harold and Catherine. Eliza became a second mother to Phoebe Ann's daughter Fannie (Frances) after her parents died. Fannie was treated like a daughter by the Browns. When the Browns moved to Detroit, Fanny visited them often and was taken to baseball games and escorted around the town.

Albert Fields lived in California. Richard and Phoebe Ann's son Henry visited his uncle often and later named his own son after him.

Henry Fields was a veterinarian. He died young and left a wife and small son. They lived in Brighton. His wife later remarried to Edward Fields, a cousin of Henry's, and together they had a daughter. Henry's son Earl, also became a veterinarian.

In later years, Catherine lived with her daughter Sophia Stanley in Stockbridge, Michigan, but visited her daughter, Phoebe Ann during the summers. She had little money to buy presents, but she taught her granddaughter, Fannie, her loving ways and how to sew and crochet. She died when Fanny was 11 or 12 years old.

Catherine died 29 Oct 1913, age 79, at the home of her daughter, Sophia Fields Stanley in Stockbridge. Her death certificate lists her parents as Patrick and Barbara (White) Cassidy.
