His father, who was a miller, moved around quite a lot operating mills when Clarence was young.
1848-49 they were in Lowell, Mass.
1850 they were in Burlington, VT
1852 they were in Providence, RI
1855 they were in NH
1856 they moved west to Minnesota
1859 they moved to Franklin Co, MO
1861 they were in Gasconade Co, Mo
1865 they were in Rolla, Mo
1868 they moved to the SE corner of Douglas Co, MO where Miles died in 1879.

In 1868 he married Elizabeth A. "Betsy" Upshaw.

Clarence was a prosperous farmer, a livestock raiser, and a miller, but became an alcoholic and went bankrupt. Later in life, he was converted and joined the Methodist church.

In 1880 he and Betsy were living in Richland township, Douglas county, Mo. with his mother Susan living with them.

In 1878 & 1886 he bought land in Douglas Co, Mo. and for most of his life lived in Douglas Co, Mo.

According to his Missouri death certificate #10035 (info provided by his son Harry) his date of birth as 11 Nov 1845 and his date of death as 6 Mar 1936 with a place of death of Dunklin County, MO. See:

However, his parents were married in Oct 1846, so his birth year must have been 1847.
