Nicolaus Caspar was born in Argenthal, Hunsruck (about 30 km west of Mainz) to Gottfried Caspar and Maria Bruck. A carpenter, he sailed to America and then via the Erie Canal and Great Lakes to Dheinsville, Wisconsin (now Germantown) in 1843 with his wife Anna Susanna (Dix) Caspar, sons Peter and Philip, and daughters Katherina and Helena. He died in 1871 while working with son-in-law Peter Sinz (Helena's husband) to repair the Sinz Hotel in Glenbeulah after a fire. Following Nicolaus' death, Susanna lived with their oldest son Peter at Dheinsville. She died in 1888 and was buried in her son's family plot there, rather than fifty or so miles away at Glenbeulah with her husband.

Inscription

Hier Ruhet Nicolaus Caspar

Ruhe wohl du treuer Gatte
Vater ruhe wohl in diener stillen grabe
Wandeln wollen wir den Tugend Pfade
Bis der Herr des Himmels uns auch raft

Rest in peace ye faithful Husband
Father rest well in your silent grave
We will wander on the Path of Virtue
Until the Lord in Heaven calls us home
