John Hatke died at St. Anthony's Hospital at Effingham about mid-night Thursday night, July 9, 1942, after having been in failing health for several months. He was 81 years of age at the time of his death and had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Ruben Kuhns on Route 33, south of Effingham for the past several years. Mrs. Hatke, the former Anna Krieg, preceded her husband in death in 1939.

Surviving are one daughter; Mrs. Reuben (Catherine) Kuhns of Effingham; two sons: William of Sigel and John of La Porte, Indiana; besides four grandchildren; one half-brother: Joseph Hatke of north of Teutopolis and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday morning from the Sacred Heart Church at Effingham at 9 o'clock, followed by interment in St. Francis cemetery in Teutopolis. Pall-bearers were: Frank, Victor and William Engle, George, Ferd and Tony Hatke.

The following relatives attended the funeral services Monday morning: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hatke and daughter of Sigel; Mr. George Engle Sr., Agnes and Donna Jean Engle, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Engle, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hatke and son George, Mrs. Henry Funneman and daughter, Mrs. George Weis, Mrs. Leo Hardiek of Teutopolis, and possibly others whose names we were unable to get.
