Josephine Ann Hatke was born on August 30, 1847 in Teutopolis, Illinois. She was baptized on August 31, 1847 by the Rev. Joseph Kuenster at St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Church in Teutopolis. Her godparents were Margaret Busse and John Werner Busse. The Busse couple was related to Josephine through her father's maternal side of the family.

Josephine attended school in Teutopolis, Illinois and when she was old enough, she went to Quincy, Illinois and learned to be a midwife.

Josephine married John Bernard Dahlmann Deiterman on February 4, 1868 at St. Francis Church of Assisi, Teutopolis, Effingham County, Illinois. Josephine was 20 years old and John was 40 when they married. Josephine's older sister, Bernardine, had married John's younger brother, Edward, in 1862, so Josephine had known John for awhile.

John and Josephine Deiterman traveled by wagon train in October, 1874 to Texas and were among the first founders of Tours (St. Martinsville), Texas.

Josephine died at home at West, Texas of Broncho-Pneumonia and Influenza.

Inscription

The tombstone on Josephina Hatke Deiterman's grave has her name spelled Detterman, however her husband John always used the spelling of Deiterman. All of the documentation I've found on Josephine after her marriage to John has the spelling as Deiterman. I think this grave marker was placed sometime in the 1990s. I do not know who placed the grave marker. The original grave marker was a concrete block with a metal plate with the inscription: Josephine Detterman. The date of birth on her tombstone is incorrect. It should be August 30, 1847

According to the church records at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Teutopolis, Illinois, Josephine was born on August 30, 1847. Josephine changed the spelling of the name to Detterman around 1905.

Died at home at West, McLennan Co., Texas of Broncho-Pneumonia; Contributory-Influenza.
