Herbert Lee Norfleet was born to Carthel and Elsie (Henderson) Norfleet in Somerset, Kentucky. Herbert had appox 16 or 17 brothers and sisters. Herbert first joined the U.S.Navy where he served for two years. After leaving the navy he joined the U.S. Army where he was to retired after 20 years.

During his time in the Army Herbert served in the Korean War and Vietnam War. Other duty stations included Alaska, West Virgina and France. In Nov 1962 Herbert was an honor guard for President Kennedy's lying in state, funeral and burial. He did appear on the cover of either Time or Life magazine in that role according to brothers and sisters.
