Raymond Morris Dowell, 89, died Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at his son's home in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was born Aug. 6, 1919, in Jordan, Mont., to David Peeler and Edith Rebecca Mather Dowell. The family lived briefly in Canada and in Missouri before moving to Fowler when he was young. He attended school there, graduating from Fowler High School.

In the early 1940s, Mr. Dowell and his brother, Paul, purchased land in Lane County and began the Dowell Brother's partnership. On April 18, 1948, he married Anna Laura Yates in Garden City. They settled on the farm in Lane County, where he continued to live well into his 80s. He was a member of First Christian Church of Dighton and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 as part of the 60th Infantry Division.

His wife died July 6, 2003. He also was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Walter Clark, David Paul, Warren Ernest and Clayton Randall Dowell; and a sister, Madeline Spivey.

Survivors include a son, Dan Dowell of Fort Worth; a brother, Robert Dowell of Dighton; a granddaughter; five stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral was at First Christian Church of Dighton. Burial was at Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
