Donald Avey passed away at UC San Francisco after a short illness on Sunday July 19, 2009. Don was born in Renton, WA to Roy A. and Agnes M. Avey, July 20, 1934.
The family moved to Redding in 1939 as Don's father worked on Shasta Dam. Don attended school at the newly opened Cypress Street School. He lettered in track at Shasta High School and graduated in 1952. He attended both Shasta College and UC Berekley. Don chose to enter the Air Force as a radar navigator and received his commission and wings in 1956. During his 26 year Air Force career, he logged nearly 5,000 hours in B-47s, B-52s, FB-111As and over 200 Combat hours in the RF-4C; flying more than 100 missions over North Vietnam. Don retired from the Air Force in 1981 as the Director of Combat Intelligence, Headquarters, 15th Air Force. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, and Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf clusters and other awards. After his Air Force career, Don joined Marilyn working in the travel agency that he and Marilyn opened in 1979. In retirement, Marilyn and Don returned to Redding where Don enjoyed fishing and golf, although the results of both, according to Don, were "unremarkable". He was a life member and supporter of Cal Alumni, the VFW, and Military Officers of America. In his youth he was both an Eagle Scout and Master Councilor, Order of DeMolay.
Don is survived by the love of his life, Marilyn Avey. They met at Shasta High School and were married in 1956. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with friends and family in 2006. Marilyn brought Don love, joy, stability, comfort and happiness. Don is also survived by his children and their families: His eldest daughter Laura Dunaj and her husband, Jeff and their children Brenton and Jennifer of Redding; Gary Avey and his daughter, Lauren of Rocklin, CA; and Carol Smith and her husband Peter and their children Matthew, Jared, Bethany and Hannah of Sonora, CA. Don was always proud that all three children were college graduates and working in the professional worlds. He will also be missed by his sister, Irene Granger of Weaverville, as well as his large extended family.
Visitation will be from 3:00 to 6:00 pm on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at McDonald's Chapel on Continental Street in Redding. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church on the corner of East and South Street, Redding on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 11:00 am.
