He in turn sold to Warren Groth who remodeled the station, adding the motel first and then the Coffee Cup. IRON RIVER-What do this area’s merchants think about Michigan’s new liquor liability law?
“It stinks!”
Like it or not, new state requirements take effect on April 1.
After that, liquor liability insurance will be required for all bars, restaurants and party stores in Michigan.
The licensees see the law as raising the cost of doing business in Michigan.
“I think Mack and Sofio fell asleep at the switch,” commented Joe Kaczynski, who has operated the Coffeee Cup in Beechwood for 28 years.
“It’s going to be a hardship for a lot of small businesses,” added Kaczynski, who isn’t sure yet what his cost will be.
The Coffee Cup is a small, crowded store, and only has a small selection of beer and wine. (“I don’t think we’ve sold wine in about a week.”) But it’s important to the store, Kaczynski explains, because when someone comes in to buy beer, it’s not only beer.
