James Sears was the son of John Lewis Sears & Phoeby Bennett Sears. He was born in 1845 in Bryants Store, Knox County, Kentucky. The area was also known as Little Poplar Creek which was the voting precinct. Bryants Store was the Post Office.
James Sears married Mary Ann Shelton on August 4, 1868 in Whitley County, Kentucky. To this union 14 children were born with 10 of them living into adulthood:
1) Levi Sears born Jul 1869 and died April 19, 1924.
2) Lewis Sears born Feb. 3, 1870 and died Nov. 7, 1947.
3) Sarah Sears Sawyers 1872-1955
4) Delila Sears Reynolds Gentry born Jan. 6, 1874 and died ??? ( The last place she is found is in Greasy Creek in 1920. It believed she went to Wise county, Virginia because 5 of her children were found there, but there is no record of her so far.)
5) Joseph Sears born Nov. 1876 and died Mar. 25, 1925 in the Coal Mines at Four Mile, Bell County, Kentucky.
6) Ben Shelton Sears born June 14,1876 and died young.
7) Polly Sears Bennett born 1877 and died 1958.
8) James William Sears (1879-1937) born Mar. 15, 1880 and died Nov. 14, 1935.
9) Alexander Lincoln Boone Sears born June 11, 1885 and died Sept. 1, 1942.
10) John Harrison Sears born June 2, 1890 and died Mar. 4, 1963.
11) Joshua Thomas "Josh Tom" Sears born Jan 1894 and died May 17, 1974.
There were 3 other children, who died young, for which there is no more information at this time.
James Sears, their Father was in the Civil War serving in the 49th Kentucky Infantry per his Civil War Papers.
He came home from the war with Measles and Rheumatic Fever which really took a toll on him. He was very sick almost all of his married life with Mary Ann per his Civil War Pension Packet which contains all of his medical history.
After years of being near death many times, James died in 1898.
He was buried on the Croley Cemetery.
Mary Ann contacted the Veterans and had a white marble marker put on his grave. ~~~ per Janie and Pati.
