witnessed by John Jarrett & William Hawkins:

Buncombe County, NC 1792-1825"
by Margaret W. Haile in Vol. 5 page 185.

NOTE: Genealogist, June Baldwin Bork, (THE BURNETTS AND THEIR CONNECTION Vol II), records the following.

A Jesse Barnit (possibly our Jesse Burnet) was under the command of Capt. Thomas Smith, who was under the command of Col.Penn who commanded 21 companies of the Virginia, Henry Co. Virginia Militia. Other members with Jesse Burnett were William Stewart, John Hurd, James Strange, Henry Smith Frances Telston, Thomas Hurd, George Stewart, David Atkins, Jonathan Pratt, George Bowles and Henry Law.

One account of the history of Henry Co. Va. Militia, is written by Judith Parks Hill.
On March 11,1781, Col. Penn and his men marched from Beaver Creek,Henry Co, crossed Rowland's Ford just below Fontaine, followed the old road, deep cuts now showing its location, up Marrowbone Valley crossing the creek west of where Ridgeway now stands, thence along the ridge two miles, then crossing Matrimony Creek half a mile to the state line, only one mile from the Marrowbone home of Old Rusty Hairston to the National Highway is now used for public road. From the line south is not known, however, they marched so rapidly they soon reached British General Lord Cornwallis a few miles north of Greensboro, North Carolina and begin what became known as the Battle of Guilford Court House on March 25,1781.

NOTE: Family history records Jesse Burnett's siblings Thomas Burnett, and Joseph Burnett were Whigs.

Joseph Burnett was killed at the battle of Kings Mt. NC. The same day, Thomas Burnett was arrested by the Tories on the way to fight the British at Kings Mt. He was tied to a tree and shot.
