William Lurty Diehl, owner and operator of Diehl's Service Station, Route 2, Waynesboro, died unexpectedly at 4 a.m. yesterday. Born Oct. 27, 1897 in Augusta County, he was the son of Mrs. Clara Ritter Diehl, Staunton, who survives him, and the late Charles S. Diehl.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ottie F. Diehl; one son, William A. Diehl; two daughters, Miss Louise Diehl and Mrs. Herbert (Isabelle) Welcher, Route 2, Waynesboro; two sisters, Mrs. Monor (Edna) Sheffer and Mrs. Herman (Virginia) Miller, both of Staunton; two brothers, A. Stuard Diehl and Floyd Diehl, Washington, D. C.; and five grandchildren.
He was a member of Mt. Vernon Church of the Brethren and a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.
Body will remain at the Etter Funeral Home until this afternoon when it will be returned to his residence where it will remain until Sunday at 1:30 p.m. At that time, the body will be placed in the Mt. Vernon Church of the Brethren where the funeral will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. Guy K. Stump assisted by the Rev. Ervin F. Block and the Rev. R. Bowen Moore with interment in Riverview Cemetery, Waynesboro.
Active pallbearers will be John Kindig, Charles Kindig, John Forrer, Earl Fitzgerald, Craig Brown, Homer Weaver, Melvin Eavers, and Ward Lee Cohron.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Strickler, Gordon Matheny, Charles Varner, Edward G. Alexander, R. B. Dean, Elmer H. Clark Sr., Lyle Kindig, Earl Kindig, James Hewitt, W. M. Kelly, Robert Kelly, Clifton Stinnett, Dr. Julio Jimenez, Henry C. Stalter, Lewis Harper, John Martin, George W. Payne, Howe Spitler, Arthur E. Engman, J. K. Livesay, Jake Lightner, Edwin A. Earhart, Richard Robertson, C. B. Yeago Sr., James Coffey, Benny Kanagy, Guy Brooks, William Black, and Bob Burnett.
