William A. "Bill" Diehl, 86, of Stuarts Draft passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at his residence, 303 Cambridge Drive.

Born November 13, 1921, in Augusta County, Bill was a son of the late Lurty and Ottie Rebecca (Fitzgerald) Diehl. Mr. Diehl was a member of White Hill Church of the Brethren, where he played an integral role in initiating the construction of the new church. As well, Mr. Diehl also served on the Board of Commissions with White Hill Church of the Brethren for some time. Bill spent many of his years in business endeavors in the Stuarts Draft area, including Diehl Motors, Diehl Mobile Homes, Augusta Realty and Mortgage, and Stuarts Draft Construction, as well as operating motels in Roanoke and Lexington. In recent years, he and his wife operated B&E Collectibles at Verona Flea Market, where Bill also served as manager. He was also a veteran of the United States Army, serving in WWII. He was a member of the Stuarts Draft VFW Post 9339.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Diehl was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel (Eavers) Diehl, who passed away in 1986. Also preceding Bill in death was a son, Edgar Ray Diehl, who passed in 2007; and one sister, Isabelle Diehl Welcher.

Mr. Diehl is survived by his wife, Ellen M. Diehl; son, William Hansford Diehl and his wife Ann; one daughter-in-law, Peggy W. Diehl; three step daughters, Sue M. East and her husband Harry, Jackie M. Ott and her fiancée Tommy Sheets, and Lori Sweet and her husband Gary; one sister, Louise R. Diehl; five grandchildren, Rita Ann Diehl Burmester, Ricky Wood Diehl, William Mitchell Diehl, Gregory Ray Diehl and Michael Dean Diehl; two step grandchildren, Seth and Skyler Sweet; twelve great grand children Christopher and Camden Burmester, Lance, Landon, Lana, Tanner, Tara, Ciara, Ashley, Alicia, and America Diehl, and Alexa Graves; three nieces and nephews, Janet W. Cook, Roger Welcher, and H. Wayne Welcher.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M., on Thursday, July 10, 2008, in the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 1870 Stuarts Draft Highway, with Reverend James Chappell officiating. Interment will follow in Augusta Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 340. Active Pallbearers will be Mitchell, Gregory, Ricky and Michael Diehl, and Harry East, Tommy Sheets, and Gary Sweet. Honorary Pallbearers will be Elwood Simmons, Harry Nethken, Charlie Lam, Cory Ramsey, Roger Welcher, and Ed Williams.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at the funeral home.
