Grandma Burma was a mystery. She disappeared when our mother was a year old. Rumors had her running off with another man, hit by a bus in Texas, her throat slit and left for dead in a cattle yard. My sister and I started looking for info on her when our mother was 43 years old. We were able to locate her living in Alaska with her husband. We found her son Willie Traffenstedt in Tennessee and he helped us to get in touch with her.
We knew her for about 8 years before she passed away. The rumor of her running off with another man was true, as was the one of a man slighting her throat and leaving her for dead. She always wore a scarf to cover up the scar.
She told us her middle name was Lourda. And her parents names. But that was all the information she was willing to share with us.
After she passed away I was able to get a copy of her social security application. On it she said her middle name was Roberta and that her last name was Sauls at the time.
We have never been able to find any record of her anywhere. Not in the census, nor marriage license, or any other kind of official record.
We were just happy to reunite her with our mother and uncle and to get to know her. I guess she had her reason's for not sharing more info about herself. We still don't know where her mother is buried, so we still have work to do and hopefully solve another mystery.
