Husband of Elizabeth (Hardesty) McVay (1820-1907). Married on Sept. 17, 1837 in Clinton, Brown County, Ohio. Father of fourteen children including: Nancy E., Henry Hardesty, Jane Elmira "Jenny," Angeline A., Elizabeth, Luther F. and Keziah "Kitty" McVay. John was the son of Luther McVay and Jane (Patterson) McVay.

Note: This John McVay was the son of Luther McVay and Jane Patterson. There is another, John McVay (but he is John A. McVay) who was born in 1819 in Ohio and died in 1891 in Iowa who was also married to an Elizabeth. (They are often confused with each other.) The other John McVay is buried in Dickenson Cemetery in Linn County, Iowa and is the son of Peter McVay and Hannah Martin.
