James E. Durant was born in Little Falls, near the town of Cataract, WI. He grew up on the family farm, along with his brother "Bill" & younger sister Nellie, and 3 older 1/2 siblings. His interests turned to lumbering and sawmilling.
He married Minnie May Balch, Nov 28th 1889, in La Crosse, WI. In 1899, with the local lumber industry winding down, they followed the timber, & moved north to Commonwealth, Florence County, WI, traveling by wagon. Minnie said later, that the trip was so rough, she was afraid her wedding ring would fall off of her hand.
