He enlisted on July 20th, 1863, at New York City, New York, for three years service at the age of 35, and was mustered into service as a Private in Company A of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 7th, 1863, at Camp Sprague, Staten Island, New York. He served with the regiment through its service in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.
After contracting an illness during his service he died of disease on September 14th, 1864, at the United States Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
