BLAUVELT, ISAAC I.—Age, 33 years. Enlisted, September 6, 1862, at Dover, to serve three years; mustered in as corporal, Co. E, October 11, 1862; promoted sergeant, January 12, 1863; wounded in action, May 25, 1864, and died of his wounds, May 27, 1864, at Dallas, Ga.

Letter Written to His Widow Following His Death

Camp 150th N.Y.S. Vols in the field near Dallas, Ga
May 31st 1864

A very unpleasant Duty devolves on me to perform to inform you of the death of your husband. He was wounded by a shell on the afternoon of 25th near the knee of the right leg. His leg was amputated on the 29th and he died on the 30th about noon. The delay of amputating was on account of weakness. He was full of Hope to the last.

I had his remains carefully placed beneath the sod and with silent tears left him to his last sleep. May his ashes rest in peace until the final Trump shall sound. He was beloved by all who knew him and his memory will not soon be forgotten.

He has nearly $80 owing him, which I will collect when we get our pay and send to you if my life is spared. And he has 5 months' pay due besides. His final statement will be sent to the war department as soon as possible and the five months wages and $100 Bounty will be paid to you. Any information you wish in my power to give will be cheerfully given. I enclose you some pieces of silver which were in his pocket. No other money.

We have since been fighting here. This is the seventh day and the battle not yet closed. Our regiment has not been engaged since the first day. Our troops losses have not been very heavy, as we are fighting on the suspension Billy wall and myself are safe.

I received your letter of the 14th on the 27th. I wrote to my wife to tell you he was badly wounded. If she did not get the letter, tell her I am well.

In closing this sad letter, you have the sympathy of myself and the whole Co. for you in your sad bereavement. But one thought seems for a moment to dispel the sorrow. He fell fighting manfully for his country and his name will be enrolled among the fallen heroes who fell fighting manfully for freedom. Hoping this cruel war will be soon over.

I remain yours I Truly and in Sorrow,
Geo F. Sarles

His widow, Annie Miller Blauvelt, received a Widow's pension. She was a resident of Westchester County, Post Office Bedford station, New York. Isaac and Annie were married 23 October 1851 at New York City.

There was a child, Annabelle Blauvelt, who went by Belle. In the 1860 US Census, her name was incorrectly transcribed as Beth. The family was living in Bedford, Westchester County, New York. Though her mother was Ronda Ann, her mother is shown as Ann Blauvelt in that census.
Belle was in her sister Sarah "Sallie" Blauvelt's will.

Annabelle died on 11 March 1941 in the Bronx and is buried in Woodlawn. She married Charles Crawford. His last name in the marriage record was transcribed as Crowford. I am currently researching which name is correct. Death record spelling of the last name was Crawford for both husband and wife. In her death certificate, Isaac Blauvelt and Rhoda Miller are given as her parents.
