He was the paternal grandson of Walter Rand & Mary Parker who came to Wake County from Isle of Wight, VA in the late 1780's to settle on land inherited from his brother John Rand.
Nat's father had first married Pherebee Parker in 1817, and by her had 11 children. When Pherebee died in 1843, he married Nat's mother, Nancy, in 1845.
Nat entered the retail dry goods business early on, beginning with a store in Selma, Johnston County by the time he was 27. In 1888, the 35-year old and removed to Raleigh where he opened a successful wholesale grocery business and that year married 20-year old Selina Ballentine, daughter of farmer James D. Ballentine of Middle Creek, Wake County.
The couple would become parents to 6 known children: Phillip Rand (1889-1922), Julian Rand (1891), Nathaniel Macon Rand Jr. (1895-1895), Gordon Rand (1897-1942), Virginia Rand (ca. 1902) and Nancy Rand (c. 1909).
Nat Macon Rand died in 1914 at age 61. His wife of 26 years survived him another 31 years, passing in 1945 at age 77.
