He was reared and educated in Tulsa and graduated with the Webster High School Class of 1966. He continued his education attending Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He was a veteran of the armed forces having served his country honorably with the United States Army during Vietnam. He spent over 32 years working for Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad before retiring as an inspector. He enjoyed a variety of pastimes including working with show horses and playing poker, but especially spending time with his kids.

Serving as casket bearers were Brian Smith, Ronnie Smith, Tyler Smith, Rob Engles, Rick Engles, Ron Engles, Danny Barbee, and Dick Broadland.
