James was the son of John and Rebecca Hughes of Nottingham Twp., old Burlington Co. (now Hamilton Twp., Mercer Co.), NJ. He married first to Catharine, who died in childbirth in 1806. They had 7 children together (all linked below).

James married second to Martha, 15 December 1808 (the date is recited in his will). They had 2 children (also linked below).

James purchased 103 acres in Nottingham and Windsor townships in 1787; he probably owned other lands. He was an elder of the Presbyterian Church of Hamilton Square. He died in Nottingham (now Hamilton) Twp.
