Grace Wooster DeHaan, 87, of Placerville, died Aug. 25. She was born on Sept. 7, 1915 in Lewiston, Idaho.

Mrs. DeHaan was raised with her two younger brothers, Stanley and Howard Wooster, to a family of schoolteachers. Her father, Earl Stanley Wooster, taught at the college level in the rural school systems. Her mother, Ruth Ransom, originally of Buffalo, N.Y., taught school prior to her marriage. In 1916, they moved to Washington. When Mrs. DeHaan was 7 years old, her mother died in childbirth; her father remarried many years later to a distant cousin, Edith Adelberger. Edith helped the family through their education process.

Upon Mrs. DeHaan's graduation from high school, jobs proved scarce, pay was low, and area colleges were nonexistent. She found employment at the Vancouver, Wash., Army Post, earning $15 a month. By 1935, she was taking home $20 per month, and her employer, the Lt. Lloyd family, was transferred to Honolulu, Hawaii. They asked her to join them there and she was able to attend the University of Honolulu at Hawaii. She married Harvey John (Jack) Edens in 1937, and a son Richard, followed in 1938. A daughter, Ruth Anne Peoples, followed in 1943.

After her husband's tour of duty in the South Seas, Mrs. DeHaan divorced and remarried Jack. A daughter, Janis, was born in 1947 in Bend, Ore., and a son, John Jr., was born in Boise, Idaho in 1949. The family lived 10 years in Boise, then Jack's job took them to Camp Hanford in Richland, Wash., then to Larson Air Force Base in Moses Lake, Wash. With the kids in school most of the day, Mrs. DeHaan took a job in accounting. In 1958 the family was transferred to Vandenberg AFB in California, then transferred again to McClellan AFB. At that time, Jack divorced Mrs. DeHaan. She then worked until her retirement from the federal government in 1977.

In 1978, when Joseph G. DeHaan returned from a tour of duty in Massachusetts, the couple's relationship was renewed and they were wed in Elko, Nev., on Mrs. DeHaan's 65th birthday. They enjoyed traveling far and wide, visiting all 50 states, several European countries, Northern Africa and parts of Alaska and Canada; they wintered in Mulege, Baja Sur, Mexico. They eventually slowed their lives down and lived in Swansboro for 10 years. There, they became involved in raising funds for the Mosquito Volunteer Fire Department. In 1999, due to her husband's health, they moved to the city of Placerville.

Mrs. DeHaan enjoyed sewing, cooking, needlework, gardening, family gatherings, playing the piano and organ and feeding hummingbirds and finches. She will be remembered for her constant positive attitude and her smile.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph DeHaan; her daughter, Janis Escamilla of Placerville; her sons, Richard Edens of Santa Maria and John Edens of Atascadero; her stepchildren, Kathy Jones and Joseph W. DeHaan of Yuba City; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 30 at Chapel of the Pines Funeral Home in Placerville, Interment will be at Westwood Hills Memorial Park.
