Obituary: Lola S. Thurgood
CLEARFIELD - Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lola Lucile Stoker Thurgood, 91, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001 at Rocky Mountain Care in Clearfield, Utah of causes incident to age.

She was born Aug. 20, 1910 in Clearfield, Utah, the daughter of David Jr. and Emma Louisa Stahle Stoker. She graduated from Davis High School, attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah and was a licensed beautician.

She married Glen Lacy Thurgood on Dec. 11, 1934 in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Following their marriage, they moved to Westwood, Lassen County, California where they resided for 21 years and developed special friendships that lasted their lifetime. They returned to Clearfield, where she lived until her passing.

She was a member of the Clearfield 6th Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mom served in many church callings which included Visiting Teacher, Relief Society President, Junior Sunday School Coordinator and teacher in the Relief Society, Primary and Young Women's organizations.

Mom's pride and joy was providing for and serving her family. When it became necessary to supplement the family income, Mom worked several years, the longest of which was the Davis County School District lunch program as a cook at South Clearfield Elementary. Mom loved to garden and her yard was always a rainbow of color. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, quilting, cooking, baking, candy making and dipping chocolates with her sister Mary.

She is survived by three sons and three daughters, Glen S. (Brenda) Thurgood, Highland UT; David C. (Marilyn) Thurgood, Lindon UT; Marvin J. (Vicki) Thurgood, West Richland WA; Carolyn (Blaine C.) Phillips, Washington Terrace, UT; Margil (Ted) Terry, Orem UT; and Joyce Thurgood, Salt Lake City, UT; 28 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Golden (Willey) Stoker, Logan, UT; and one sister, Mary Heiner, Roy, UT. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen, her parents, two brothers, five sisters and one grandson.

Mom was a very gracious lady. Her children and grandchildren received a quilt, doily or other handmade article at Christmas that she had made, many times with Joyce's help. Mother loved Christmas, she was the glue that held the family Christmas Eve gathering together. Whenever visiting her home, she made sure that you did not leave without having something to eat. She was always there to make sure everyone had clean, mended clothes. You never knew when times were tough because she never complained and did what needed to be done to make the difference. She was always polite and said "thank you" even when she had every reason to be otherwise. Many were her deeds; quiet was her service; and, even nearing death, she bore suffering with great dignity and patience.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 22nd at 11 a.m. at the Clearfield 6th Ward Chapel, 300 North 200 West. Friends may call at Lindquist's Clearfield Mortuary, 1050 South State Street, on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Mon. at the Ward Chapel from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, Clearfield City Cemetery.

Our family extends special appreciation and thanks to Dr. Frank Haglund for his caring and compassion; and to the staff at Rocky Mountain Care Center for the loving care they provided to our mother.
