Alexander was the 4th of 8 children born to Solomon Jordan and Elizabeth Shuping.

He married Mary Angeline Gossett Sept. 27, 1867, in Hazelwood precinct, Alexander County, Illinois. Eleven children were born to this marriage: Henry Elmer, John Francis, Minnie Parlee, Viola Caroline, Moses Alexander, William Edward, Sarah Elizabeth, Cynthia Alice, Sidney Dolphus, Harry Everett and Ira Lee.
