George was the son of Ephraim and Jane Finley Bennett. He married Margaretta M. Haslett on Jan. 17, 1849 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. They moved to Iowa about 1851. George and Margaretta were the parents of five children.
After wife Margaretta's death, George married his sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Best Haslett, Dec. 1894, whose husband (Margaretta's brother, William Haslett) had also recently died. Mary Ellen Haslett was a resident of Berrien county, Michigan, and George lived there with her until his death in 1896. His remains were shipped to Iowa for burial next to his wife of almost 45 years, Margaretta Haslett Bennett.
