PASSES AT HOME

S.M.C. Hughes, 80, Dies After Long Illness; Funeral Monday

DEER LODGE, March 12 -- (Special) -- S.M.C. Hughes, 80, a resident of the Flint Creek valley for 40 years and at one time associated with Frank Conley in the operation of the Montana state prison, died at his home in Hall this morning after a long illness.
He was born in Missouri and as a young man moved to Pueblo, Colo., where he followed mining for some time. He came to Montana in 1880 and settled in Pioneer where he operated mining enterprises.
Later he became associated with Mr. Conley in the operation of the state penitentiary at Deer Lodge.
In 1889 he married Ella Thomas. Four children were born to the union. They are Mrs. William Knudson in Los Angeles, Malcolm, Leland and Ted Hughes of the Flint Creek valley region.
After leaving Deer Lodge Mr. Hughes established a mercantile business at Hall, an enterprise he operated intil failing health forced him to retire a few months ago.
The body is at the Ross Mortuary in Deer Lodge and will be taken to the Hall church for funeral services scheduled Monday afternoon at ?? o'clock. The Rev. Mr. Muskett will officiate. Interment will be in New Chicago cemetery.

Funeral services were held Mon. afternoon for S.M.C. [Solon Marianeas Conrad] Hughes at the Hall Methodist church. The Rev. A. Muskett officiated. Interment was in the family plot in the Valley cemetery. Pallbearers were Harry Bates, Erick Johnson, Frank Morse, Allen Conn, Jessee Henderson and Gary Swigart.
