Ira's father, Christopher Columbus Mulvaney, owned 600 acres of land "on the waters of the Tennessee River." They moved to Omega Twp., Marion County, Illinois sometime between 1842 and 1850. There were 10 siblings along with Ira who came with their parents. They came over The Old Wilderness Trail and through Cumberland Gap. Alta Krutsinger, a descendant of Christopher Columbus Mulvaney Sr., told the story of the seven boys of Christopher who drove their ax in the ground in Omega soil and said, "We'll camp right here and go no farther." This is what they did. George, Matilda, and Malinda came a few years later and joined the family in Omega Twp. Jacob, one son of Christopher, died soon after they arrived in Omega.
