While Jesse was in Blount Co., Tennessee he met and fell in love with Sarah Louisa Hestor Ann Hammers who was later to become Jesse's first wife. At the age of sixteen he went to Omega Twp. in Marion County, Illinois with his father and siblings. In 1851 Jesse bought 80 acres of land in section 12 in NE and NW quarters (deed no. 14477 & 47899) for $520.

At the age of 18, Jesse returned to Tennessee to claim Sarah Louisa Hestor Ann Hammers as his bride. It has been told that Jesse ran off with his bride on horseback. It must have been this bride because Sarah would have only been 15 or 16 years of age at the time. On Sep 15, 1853, they were united in marriage in Roane Co., Tennessee with Ezekiel Stansbury (husband of Matilda Mulvaney) as bondsman. Jesse and Sarah return to Marion County, Illinois, Omega Twp and set up housekeeping. Sarah passed away Dec 15, 1858 and was laid to rest in the Phillips Cemetery.

Jesse then married Rella Krutsinger around 1862 and she passed away in March 1865 in Clay County, Illinois. She was buried in the Stipp Cemetery which is located SW of Oscaloosa, Illinois.

On March 29, 1865, Jesse enlisted in 53rd Regiment credited to Oskaloosa, Illinois, Clay County. Due to a disability he was mustered out May 8, 1865. He never fully regained his complete health from whatever he contracted in the war.

On Aug 31, 1865, Jesse married his third wife Mary "Aunt Polly" Ruckman. They were married at her home by Hiram Green. Polly took all the small children from Jesse's other marriages and helped raise several grandchildren. Jesse's last days were spent as an invalid. His family would carry him out and place him in the shade of a tree where he would sit and enjoy the birds and animals. Jesse passed away Jan 19, 1913 after a lengthy illness. He was laid to rest by his first wife, Sarah, in the Phillips Cemetery. Polly lived until April 16, 1917 and she was buried by Rhoda Mulvaney (the wife of her son, Christopher Columbus Mulvaney)
