Mrs. Marie McKnight Bates, wife of Stanley E. Bates, was killed on US Highway 17A south of Georgetown on Saturday, October 1, 1966, when an automobile driven by Elizabeth Parkman Fincher was struck by another automobile driven by Plummer Lambert.

Mrs. Bates was born December 23, 1910, in Berkeley County, a daughter of the late H. F. McKnight and Mrs. Estelle Windham McKnight.

She was employed in the lunchroom at the Berkeley Junior High School. She was a member of the Moncks Corner Methodist Church and was a Sunday School teacher.

She was survived by her husband, Stanley E. Bates; two sons, J. S. Bates of Charlotte, NC, and Carl S. Bates of Marietta, GA; two daughters, Mrs. Earle (Helen) F. Leininger of Newburgh, NY, and Mrs. John (Eva) Blair of Jacksonville, FL; two brothers, H. F. McKnight of Louisiana and Carl W. McKnight of Miami, FL; a half-brother, Jack McKnight of Ft. Rucker, AL; three sisters, Mr. J. N. Lyncker, Mrs. Harry C. Bertain, and Mrs. Ted Corby, all of Jacksonville, FL; four half-sisters, Mrs. Sam Ellsworth of Charleston, Mrs. James Wilkie of Myrtle Beach, Mrs. William E. Pipkin of Moncks Corner, and Mrs. Marvin F. Self of Texas.

Funeral services were Monday, October 3, 1966, at Moncks Corner Methodist Church. The Rev. Olin Hardwick and the Rev. T. T. Lyles officiated.

Burial, directed by Dial Funeral Home, followed in Eccles Methodist Church Cemetery near Huger.
