Son of Peleg Calley and Harriet Eliza Skinner Calley.

James was married three times.

His first wife was Virginia Ida Skinner. They married 1/20/1871 in Wilcox County, Alabama. They had five children. There is a memorial for Virginia but her date of death and burial location are actually unknown.

James' second wife was named Mrs. Annie J. Tombs. They may have had two children. Update 10/9/17 FAG member Annette Stone-Kerr found one child on the 1900 Census and a death record was found for Kinzy Cowley. Family story recorded in a book by Mollie Calley indicates that James and Annie had a falling out and she left while pregnant with their child. It seems unlikely that James and Kinzy had a parent/child relationship. This could account for the difference in the spelling of the last name. James and Annie probably had only this one child together.

James' third wife was Lora Mina Walk. They had seven children.
